MVHC Receives Acute Stroke Ready Designation from the MDH
August 8, 2014
(Le Sueur, MN) –Minnesota Valley Health Center (MVHC) achieved Acute Stroke Ready Hospital designation from the Minnesota Department of Health on August 1, 2014. This designation means that the hospital is up to date on current standards, guidelines, and best practices in caring for patients suffering from a stroke. The nursing staff had training to enhance their existing knowledge to quickly identify stroke symptoms, and administer the proper medications.
"The Acute Stroke Ready designation is a wonderful opportunity for our community because it gives residents access to outstanding medical services close to home," noted Ambria Hutton, Director of Nursing at MVHC hospital. The Minnesota Department of Health launched a statewide stroke ready designation process as the principal component of the Minnesota Stroke System. The goal of this system is that every person in Minnesota will have access to timely stroke care, regardless of their location in the state. MVHC is excited to partner with the Minnesota Department of Health to ensure that the best medical practices are being provided in rural areas. MVHC now offers stroke care at all times in addition to around the clock emergency services in the 24 hour emergency department.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in Minnesota, and Minnesota hospitals treat more than 11,000 strokes annually, so it is immensely important for hospitals to be prepared for stroke patients. Stroke risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, poor circulation, inactivity, obesity, and family history of stroke. Signs of a stroke include facial changes like an uneven smile, single arm weakness, and slurred speech. If you have any warning signs, call 911 immediately. Visit StrokeCall911.com to learn more.
